Real Stories, Real Impact: Our Work in Action
Consulting with Community
The Lake Eyre Basin is an internal drainage basin that makes up an area of nearly one-sixth (16%) of Australia. The Map provides Aboriginal people in the Basin, with a single, integrated image of the wide range of Aboriginal groups, places, Cultures and histories across the Basin.
Curijo Pty Ltd was engaged by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) to undertake consultation activities for the Lake Eyre Basin ‘Aboriginal Way’ Map.
There were over 40 representative Indigenous groups that contributed and were required to sign off on the Map. These groups had diverse views and needed an organisation that could be trusted to understand their concerns and resolve issues in a Culturally respectful way.
The advice and assistance provided to the Department, the Indigenous Steering Committee and all Lake Eyre Indigenous stakeholders throughout the consultation process enabled the agreement and sign off on the Map.

DVPC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group
Curijo was engaged by the Chair of DVPC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group to design, develop and facilitate community consultations and provide an outcome report in relation to Domestic Violence and the publication of ‘We Don’t Shoot Our Wounded’.
Our Approach
Curijo worked alongside the DVPC current key needs within the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in relation to the prevention and mitigation of family and domestic violence . We designed, delivered and facilitated six tailored, trauma informed and Culturally safe consultations across various relevant groups including Traditional Custodians, Elders, community members including people who are/were incarcerated.
Our Result
A detailed and transparent report outlining the consultation outcomes and recommendations was produced and accepted by the DVPC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group.
Curijo was able to provide a report that clearly articulated in a Culturally safe manner the voice of our ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to support the prevention and reduction of family and domestic violence. This report will guide Government and agencies strategies that are specific to the needs of the community. Feedback from participants and DVPC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group was positive.

Reconciliation Action Plan Lead
Curijo Pty Ltd were engaged by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to provide expertise in the development of their Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This was conducted through consultation and development work, in partnership with the ATO to define Reconciliation priorities and deliverables which would meet Reconciliation Australia’s standards for a Stretch RAP.
Our Approach
Curijo undertook a desktop review and determined that the consultations would be most productive if used to gather a baseline awareness and interest in the development of the RAP among staff and to further explore the reconciliation priorities relevant to the ATO. Virtual focus groups were held with ATO staff, with additional participation from RAP Working Group members and staff involved in the RAP development. Interviews were held with the Indigenous Champions and the Assistant Commissioners of the business areas. Our established relationship with Reconciliation Australia ensured we could draw in their expertise ensuring timely outcomes.
Our Result
Throughout the course of our engagement with the ATO we made several observations regarding the RAP project. We provided these reflections in a report and made recommendations to assist with ongoing RAP development activities and to provide guidance on any future planning – including RAP timelines, development, and implementation.

Family Group Conferencing Pilot
The Family Group Conferencing (FGC) pilot for the ACT was aimed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, who are at risk to keep their children safe and stay together.
Curijo Pty Ltd was engaged by the ACT Government to assist the Social Services Directorate develop and implement an effective pilot program tailored to the ACT, that is an effective strategy to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families where child safety is the primary focus.
The ACT Government required a program to be designed and piloted to keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people out of Children’s Court processes and engage their families by empowering them to make decisions for the safety and well-being of their children and young people.
The ACT Government was enabled to independently run and facilitate the FGC programme. This approach allowed effective change management through education and empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
